CONSUMER CONFIDENCE STARTS TO REBOUND
SUGGESTS RECOVERY EARLY NEXT YEAR
With gas prices still high but down by about 50 cents a gallon in many parts of the country, the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index was up in August. It had shown a moderate improvement in July but posted a more substantial gain this month, suggesting a rebound may be on the way.
The index has two main components: the Present Situation aspect and the Expectations index. The Present Situation part of the study actually was down from July to August, dropping from 65.8 to 63.2. But the Expectations part of the survey -- in which respondents project their feelings about what their situation will look like six months from now -- was up very dramatically, from 42.7 in July to 52.8 this month.
